Tuesday in La Jota - El Martes en La Jota

Welcome to last Tuesday evening in our home in La Jota. We open our Bible Study with prayer and singing...for some people in the group this is their only time in the week to fellowship with other believers.

Bienvenidos a la reunion del pasado martes en nuestro apartamento en La Jota. Comenzamos nuestro estudio biblico con oracion y con alabanzas...para algunos del grupo este es el unico momento en toda la semana que puedan reunirse con otros creyentes.

We had special music. Tuvimos musica especial.


We welcomed two new friends, Esther and Jackie. They came with a short term missions team from Casper, Wyoming, USA. They took care of the kids in the kitchen while we studied the Word in the living room. (Usually Marlan is in charge of the kids class.)

Le dimos la bienvenida a dos nuevas amigas, Esther y Jackie. Ellos vinieron con un equipo de misiones a corto plazo de Casper, Wyoming, EEUU. Ellas se ocuparon de las niñas en la cocina mientras que estudiabamos la Palabra en la sala. (Usualmente Marlan se encarga de la clase de niños.)

We were finishing a section of studies dedicated to the importance of regularly reading and studying God's Word. Now we will begin another section of studies concerning the importance and power of Prayer.

Finalizamos una seccion de estudios dedicado a la importancia de leer y estudiar diariamente la Palabra de Dios. Ahora comenzaremos una nueva seccion de estudios referente a la importancia y el poder de la Oracion.

The Pilar Festival is celebrated every year on the 12th of October. During the week leading up to this official date, Zaragoza becomes active with music, parades, flowers, and theatre in honour of the Virgin of Pilar. Trails of roses, lillies, orchids, and gladiolus wind their way to the Plaza de Pilar as an offering to this idol.

Las Fiestas del Pilar son celebradas el 12 de octubre cada año. Durante la semana previo a la fecha oficial, la ciudad de Zaragoza se llena de actividades con musica, paradas, flores y obras de teatro en honor a la Virgen del Pilar. Personas trayendo rosas, lirios, orquideas, y gladiolas para ofrendarle a este idolo llenan las calles hasta llegar a la Plaza del Pilar.

According to Spanish tradition, James the Apostle came to this area in 40 AD. On his journey in Aragonese territory, the Virgin Mary is supposed to have appeared to him on a marble pillar and asked him to build a church on the land upon which he was standing. (Needless to say this fable is not found in the Bible.)

Segun la tradicion espanola, el Apostol Santiago llego a esta parte del mundo en el año 40 DC. En su viaje en el territorio aragones, se dice que la Virgen Maria se le aparecio montada sobre un pilar de marmol y le pidio que le construyese una capilla en la tierra donde el estaba parado. (Por supuesto esta fabula no se encuentra en la Biblia.)

Today the Basilica del Pilar which was designed in 1681 stands on the spot where this supposedly happened.

La Basilica del Pilar fue disenada en 1681 y se localiza hoy en el lugar donde supuestamente ocurrio este encuentro.

The pillar or column on which Mary supposedly descended is displayed inside the Chapel of the Basilica. This attracts hundereds of pilgrims every day who arrive to kiss a small piece of the pillar which isn't protected.

El pilar, o columna, sobre el cual supuestamente descendio Maria se encuentra dentro de la capilla de la basilica. Esto atrae cientos de peregrinos cada dia que llegan y besan una parte del pilar que esta al descubierto.

When people are asked in Zaragoza, "Do you believe in God?" They immediately respond, "NO!" The surprising thing is not the answer, but where and when they give the answer...just as they are filing out of this Roman Catholic Church after attending mass. Of course the followup question is, "Why do you attend mass, if you do not believe in God?" Then they respond, "I do not believe in God, but don't you dare take away my Virgin of the Pillar."

Cuando le preguntamos a las personas de Zaragoza, "Usted cree en Dios?" Inmediatamente nos responden, "NO!" Lo sorprendente no es la respuesta que nos dan, sino donde y cuando nos dan esta respuesta...mientras que estan saliendo de esta capilla catolica romana justo despues de asistir a la misa. Claro nuestra proxima pregunta suele ser, "Y porque asiste a la misa, si no crees en Dios?" Entonces viene la respuesta, "Yo no creo en Dios, pero ni te atrevas a quitarme la Virgen del Pilar."

Calatayud

In September, Marlan had the priviledge and opportunity to go and minister in the Calatayud Evangelical Church. Pastor Juan Carlos and his wife Tere and their family have been serving the Lord in the city of Calatayud for over 10 years. Please pray that the gospel of Christ will blanket this city of 30,000 people.

En Septiembre, Marlan tuvo el privilegio y la oportunidad de compartir la Palabra en la Iglesia Evangélica de Calatayud. El Pastor Juan Carlos y su esposa Tere y su familia han estado sirviendo al Señor en la ciudad de Calatayud por mas de 10 años. Oren para que el evangelio de Cristo arrope a esta ciudad de 30,000 habitantes.
