Francis

We are thankful to the Lord for His Word, the Bible. Especially everytime we are able to place it into the hands of someone who will not only appreciate it but will also read and obey it. This is the case with Francis. He is a believer from Africa. When we were able to find him a Spanish / English Bible he was overjoyed, because now he had the Word of God in a language he can understand. Please pray for Francis, he has not seen his family in nearly seven years and his father passed away over the summer. Hopefully in 2008 he will be able to travel back to his country and see his family.

Tuesday in La Jota - El Martes en La Jota

Welcome to last Tuesday evening in our home in La Jota. We open our Bible Study with prayer and singing...for some people in the group this is their only time in the week to fellowship with other believers.

We had special music. Tuvimos musica especial.

We welcomed two new friends, Esther and Jackie. They came with a short term missions team from Casper, Wyoming, USA. They took care of the kids in the kitchen while we studied the Word in the living room. (Usually Marlan is in charge of the kids class.)

We were finishing a section of studies dedicated to the importance of regularly reading and studying God's Word. Now we will begin another section of studies concerning the importance and power of Prayer.

Pilar Oct. 12, 2007

The Pilar Festival is celebrated every year on the 12th of October. During the week leading up to this official date, Zaragoza becomes active with music, parades, flowers, and theatre in honour of the Virgin of Pilar. Trails of roses, lillies, orchids, and gladiolus wind their way to the Plaza de Pilar as an offering to this idol.

According to Spanish tradition, James the Apostle came to this area in 40 AD. On his journey in Aragonese territory, the Virgin Mary is supposed to have appeared to him on a marble pillar and asked him to build a church on the land upon which he was standing. (Needless to say this fable is not found in the Bible.)

Today the Basilica del Pilar which was designed in 1681 stands on the spot where this supposedly happened.

The line to kiss the pillar. La fila para besar la columna.
The pillar or column on which Mary supposedly descended is displayed inside the Chapel of the Basilica. This attracts hundereds of pilgrims every day who arrive to kiss a small piece of the pillar which isn't protected.

A little boy kissing the pillar. Un niño besando la columna.
When people are asked in Zaragoza, "Do you believe in God?" They immediately respond, "NO!" The surprising thing is not the answer, but where and when they give the answer...just as they are filing out of this Roman Catholic Church after attending mass. Of course the followup question is, "Why do you attend mass, if you do not believe in God?" Then they respond, "I do not believe in God, but don't you dare take away my Virgin of the Pillar."

Typical Aragonese dress. Trajes tipicos Aragon.

Please pray that the Lord will bring sight to the spiritually blind in Spain.

This is what real exchange rate math looks like on a small scale in Spain today. However, 10 Euros has less buying power in Europe than 10 Dollars in the United States of America.

Oscar & Fanny

Oscar & Fanny are from Central America. We met them one Sunday toward the end of Spring when they visited the Zalmedina Church. Oscar had recently accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as his personal Savior during his business travels in the United States. Fanny, however, was still unsure as to what Oscar had done, but she liked what God was doing with the "new" Oscar.

They attended church a few Sundays and had come to our home several times, one evening at the end of May, Mercedes had a heart to heart talk with Fanny at our dining room table. After their conversation, Fanny admitted she needed a Savior and wanted what Oscar had, Jesus in her heart. They prayed and afterwards while angels were celebrating in Heaven, we celebrated the good news with ice cream.

Unfortunately for us, they had to move to another city in Spain for work related reasons. Please pray for Oscar & Fanny that the Lord will continue to lead them and strengthen their new life together in Him.

In mid June, Mercedes and a few of the ladies that she is meeting with on a regular basis for Bible Study and encouragement, went to a town on the outskirts of Zaragoza for a mini retreat.

Jose & Jesus

José is a family man from South America who recently moved to Spain to work as a truck driver. Little did he realize that God was calling him to Spain in order to meet Him here. Jose gave his heart to the Lord at our dining room table on Sunday May 6th where we have shared several physical and spiritual meals with him. Pray for him as he is looking to the Lord for guidance.

FRANKFURT, Germany -- The euro reached an all-time high against the dollar Friday when weak U.S. growth figures reinforced worries about a widening economic disparity between Europe and the United States.
The surge will not be kind to Americans visiting Europe this summer, [or those of us who live in Europe] will feel the effect in higher prices.
The euro hit $1.3682, shooting past its previous high of $1.3667 from December 2004, after the U.S. Commerce Department reported that economic growth slowed to a 1.3 percent annual rate in the first quarter, its weakest performance in four years.
The 13-nation currency then settled back a bit to $1.3656 in midafternoon European trading, up from its $1.3601 level in late New York trading Thursday.

On April 20 we had an evangelistic event which took place at a Chinese restaurant. The idea was to invite our non-believing friends to a dinner at a “non-threatening” environment where they were presented with the Gospel. After the event they received a copy of the book Surprised by Faith by Dr. Don Bierle of Faith Studies. There was a great turn out, exactly the amount of people we prayed for. One quarter of the guests expressed their desire to know more about the Lord. One lady has been attending church since the dinner, we have had two of the families over for dinner at our house.
